Festive food market ‘will be bigger and better’

DETAILS for this year’s popular Christmas food market in Magherafelt have been announced.

The local council say the market will take place on Saturday and Sunday, December 1-2 at the Market Yard in Rainey Street.

Around 40 food outlets will take part and a separate craft tent will be provided as research has informed the council that there is a desire to extend the number of craft stalls.

Financial assistance was secured from DARD through the Northern Ireland Regional Food Programme.

Activities planned include: a Kidz corner, The Lounge (heated seated area with live entertainment), craft corner, sausage competition, cupcake competition and Christmas costume characters.

Meanwhile, the Christmas street lights switch-on will take place on December 1 at 7.30pm in Broad Street. Cool FM will provide the on stage entertainment.

They will also provide additional marketing and prizes that Cool FM gives out, such as tickets to the X-Factor final.

The council may not hold a fireworks display in Maghera next year, the monthly meeting heard.

Maghera Community Forum has asked the council to consider using the funding for the Halloween event to host a Christmas light switch on event in the town.

It is proposed that officers will consider options regarding this request and bring forward recommendations to council at a future date.

And the Halloween Hooley, which has proved very popular in Magherafelt over the years, will this year be held at Meadowbank Sports Arena on October 27.
