Fundraiser for veterans after inspirational talk

It followed an “inspirational talk” to year 13 pupils at Carrickfergus College by former soldier Andy Allen who was part of the ‘Wounded’ documentary broadcast on the BBC.

Andy lost both of his legs and 80 per cent of his eyesight in an IED (improvised explosive device) in 2008 whilst on tour in Afghanistan, a statement from the school explained.

The statement continued: “On the day of the accident one of his squad had been wearing a camera that was attached to his body armour and the events of the day were caught on film and the incredible footage was used by the BBC for the ‘BAFTA’ winning documentary.

“As a result of this accident Andy has set up a charity to support veterans living in Northern Ireland – AA Veterans Support.

“As result, the sixth form decided that they would hold a coffee morning to support this charity. They raised £160 which was much appreciated by Andy and the charity’s patrons.”

Mrs Evans, head of sixth year at Carrickfergus College, expressed her praise for the young people who organised the event.

She said: “The pupils decided to do this themselves and I am very proud of the hard work and effort they have put in.”
