Visitors from locations as diverse as Latvia, United States and China registered their vote for the causeway in the 2015 British Travel Awards – the first year that voting has been open to non-UK residents.

The Giant’s Causeway is currently battling it out with landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, Sterling Castle and the Maritime Museum, Cornwall, but the National Trust, who manage the site, are keen to bring the award home to Northern Ireland.

‘At last count, we were leading against Edinburgh Castle by a small margin, proof that a single vote could be the difference between winning and losing out,’ explained site manager, Alastair Walker. ‘This is great for Northern Ireland. These awards represent the very best in tourism across the UK’.

The prestigious travel awards offer consumers the opportunity to reward companies and visitor attractions that have provided excellent service throughout the last year.

In 2014, the National Trust team at the Giant’s Causeway welcomed 788,000 visitors, offering a first-class visitor experience and a warm welcome to travellers keen to see the natural phenomenon that puts Northern Ireland ‘on the map’.

British Travel Awards winners will be announced at a lavish gala awards dinner being held in London in late November.
