Glenarm WI celebrate 25th anniversary

The event was officially opened by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim, Mrs Joan Christie.

Mrs Christie was welcomed by Glenarm WI president Mrs Margaret McCullough, as the Magheramorne Ensemble entertained the large gathering.

The Lord Lieutenant spoke of her many good friends in the WI movement and how much it still means to women today. Mrs McCullough presented Mrs Christie with a bouquet of flowers.

Federation president Mrs Elizabeth Warden gave an interesting address on WI in the Glens, presenting Glenarm WI with a magnificent cut glass vase.

The federation’s general secretary, Mrs Irene Sproule, then addressed the gathering. Also present was former federation president Mrs Jean Mann, and past president Mrs Emily Mairs, from Scotland.

The cake was cut by first president Mrs Patricia Esler, who was joined by fellow presidents Edna McAllister, Doris Morrow, Margaret McCullough, Emily Mairs and Julie Inglis.

Entertainment was provided by The Claddagh School of Irish Dancing, trained by Louise McMillan.

The group delighted the audience with their performance.

They were followed by Carnalbanagh Primary School Choir, who brought joy to the celebration with a selection of lovely songs, directed by teacher Mrs Ritchie.

Mrs Ethel Simpson then took to the stage for a recitation of a selection of comical poems written by herself and other WI members.

This was followed by Julie Inglis’s rendition of The Green Glens of Antrim.

Prizes for the ‘Paint A Stone’ competition were won by Carnalbanagh Primary School, with Seaview Primary School in second and Carnlough Primary in third. Prizes were presented by Hazel Bell.

Mrs Lynda Wright then introduced her line-dancing team, who gave a polished performance, followed by a selection of songs.

There was also a display of crafts, tombola and WI memorabilia, bringing to an end a great day of celebration.
