Harte likely to be offered short-term deal by Tyrone

Since assuming the senior position in November 2002, Harte has always been given three-year terms, but this is the first time in his hugely successful reign that a term has expired without another one being in place. It was anticipated Harte’s managerial future would be settled at Tuesday night’s executive meeting, but there was still no clarity on the issue.

A Tyrone county board spokesman said the executive committee would meet with all county management teams before the end of the month. Given Tyrone’s remarkable All-Ireland semi-final run this summer, it is inconceivable Harte’s services will not be retained.

In the eyes of many people, it would be foolish to replace the three-time All-Ireland winning manager, but there is also a lack of high-calibre contenders for the job within the county.

Asked about his intentions in his post-match press conference after the Kerry defeat, Harte said: “I really enjoy this role and feel privileged to be in the position.

“I think there are great young players in Tyrone at the minute, a great mix of middle-aged and not-so-young, and they’re a good bunch. They are very committed athletes and it’s a pleasure to work with them.”

Prompted further on his managerial future with the Red Hands, he replied: “I haven’t said I’m going away.”

The following Wednesday night, Harte met with the Tyrone squad and outlined his plans for 2016, even though his term of office had ended.
