MID-ULSTER Ulster Unionist MLA Sandra Overend has highlighted the Electoral Office canvass taking place across Northern Ireland, and encouraged constituents to return completed forms to ensure that their correct details are on the Electoral Register.
“Electoral Office staff are to deliver registration forms to every household across Northern Ireland in the coming weeks. Everyone will need to return a completed form by the 27 September deadline to be included in the updated register of voters, regardless of whether or not you have previously been registered,” said Mrs Overend.
“It is very important that details on the Electoral Register are correct ahead of the next European elections, which take place next May. Although the dates are yet to be confirmed, local council elections to the new ‘super-councils’ are also likely for next year. Westminster and Assembly elections will follow in 2015 and 2016.
“With the next ‘election cycle’ not far away, voters will have the opportunity to participate in the workings of democracy at every level. A more accurate, updated electoral register and an increased turnout come election time would be a big step towards ensuring that all our politicians are as accountable as possible to the public that they serve.
“Whether or not you have previously voted, I would encourage everyone to ensure that they complete and return the form, in order that you may ‘have your say’ when election time comes.”
