Healthy turn-out as running craze continues in borough

The weekly Carrickfergus parkrun is remaining a popular event with 66 athletes having taken part in the most recent session.

The UK-wide running phenomenon, which kicked off in the borough on February 1, sees participants invited to take part in a free timed five kilometre run.

With a number of successful parkruns taking place in other parts of the province, including Belfast and Larne, the Carrick session is held on Saturdays from 9:30 am following a route around Shaftesbury Park.

Some 66 runners braved the cold on February 15 to take part in the weekly run, with 75 having participated in the previous week’s session.

The numbers only saw a slight fall-off from the 106 who turned up to run on February 1.

This included 34 people taking part in their first ever parkrun event.

The course starts at the front of Carrickfergus Amphitheatre and circles around to the park at the rear, where there are three laps.

Participants can be of any age and do not have to be attached to any athletic club.
