A SOUTH Derry man was ordered to carry out 200 hours of community services when he appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on drugs charges.

Leigh Gibson (21), of Moneymore Road, Desertmartin, is accused of possessing 14grams of cannabis contained in two bags and uncovered during a search by police.

Sentencing in a separate case of disorderly behaviour against Gibson at a hot food carryout in Queen Street, Magherafelt, was deferred until November 5 next year.

A PPS lawyer claimed the defendant had been fighting in the carryout and had attempted to climb over the counter to staff.

A defence barrister described Gibson as an “immature young man” who had consumed a great deal of alcohol.

District Judge Des Perry made an order for the destruction of the seized cannabis and warned Gibson to keep out of trouble.
