In Memory of Minnie

A NEW Helpline will be launched in June to help fast-track information on cases of suspected animal cruelty in the north west.

The launch, at the Waterfoot Hotel on May 14, will kick off the start of the 13th anniversary of the work of Rainbow Rehoming Centre, which is based at Ballygudden Road, Eglinton.

According to the founder of the rehoming unit, Helen Davis, the helpline is being launched in memory of a dog called Minnie who had to be rescued.

“Minnie was an elderly Japanese Akita who was discovered by a Rainbow Rehoming Centre volunteer in a six-foot by four-foot pen in an isolated area on the outskirts of Derry,” said Helen.

“The pen had no gate and contained a small makeshift kennel. There was no water. Bits of dried foot were scattered amongst her waste. It was obvious that over a long period of time Minnie had made determined efforts to escape her prison,” she said.

“With the help of the PSNI and a local vet, who had to climb into the pen to sedate Minnie, Rainbow Shelter staff finally removed her from the pen. It was later discovered that Minnie had spent almost three years confined in this cramped space.

“After a period at the Rainbow Centre Minnie finally found a new home. Sadly after just four months with her new owners who adored her, Minnie succumbed to cancer.

“With our new helpline we are determined to make our 13th year lucky for all those animals who suffer neglect and cruelty at the hands of their owners. Animals like Minnie,” said Helen.
