KILLYMOON community Group is in the running for a national award and a £10,000 bursary at the 5th Future Friendly Awards.
The group has already been announced as the winner for Northern Ireland, chosen by a public vote for promoting sustainable living in the community and will receive £1,000 to support their work.
The overall national winner will be announced by TV presenter and green mum Gabby Logan at the London Wetland Centre this Tuesday, 27 September 2011.
Killymoon Community Group is one of 12 community groups from the UK and Ireland to have been shortlisted.
The Future Friendly Awards are a nationwide search for community groups and individuals who are making a real difference through championing sustainability.
This year’s Awards have seen hundreds of entries, from community groups to eco heroes young and old - all shining examples of the inspiring work being done to help protect the environment.
A panel of sustainability experts - including representatives from the Energy Saving Trust, Waste Watch and Waterwise who support the Future Friendly programme – will select the national winner from the area finalists, resulting in one community group being crowned the ultimate Community Award winner. Will it be Killymoon Community Group?
The Killymoon Community Group aims to make their community a safer and cleaner place to live.
So far the group of residents have cleaned up their local play area for small children to enjoy and play safely, secured funding to upgrade the play area, regularly remove glass and waste material area from parks and green fields, report graffiti and dog fouling and anti-social behaviour to relevant authorities.
The group continues to surpass all expectations and continues to work hard to have their community noticed as a safe and environmentally-friendly area for all to enjoy.
