Latest: Man killed in farming accident in Pomeroy

The Pomeroy community has been left “shocked and numb” following the death of an elderly farmer yesterday evening, Tuesday, according to local councillor, Cathal Mallaghan.

The victim, who has been named locally as Barney McAleer, was working alongside his brother when the incident occurred in the Loughnamarve Road, Lime Hill area.

It is understood Mr McAleer, who was in his 80s, was struck by a tractor.

Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Cathal Mallaghan, said his thoughts and those of the entire Pomeroy community were with Mr McAleer’s family at this time.

“Barney was working with his brother getting the silage into round bales when the accident took place”, Cllr Mallaghan explained.

“His family would be very well known in the area, and his death is a big shock for the whole farming community.

“This is an extremely busy time of year for farmers, everybody is working long hours trying their best to get the silage ready for the winter feed.

“The Pomeroy community will of course be rallying around the McAleer family. Everybody is just completely shocked and numb.”

A spokeswoman from the Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) said: “HSENI are investigating the death of a farmer near Pomeroy in County Tyrone. Our thoughts are with his family at this most difficult time.”
