Local kids have green fingers

THE Parks Nursery Team has a great appetite for sharing their affection of all things green with as many people across the Borough as possible.

In recent months it has visited and worked with many community groups to promote the efforts of ‘Coleraine in Colour’ and to encourage everyone to get involved.

Recently the team visited Rainbows Day Nursery in Mountsandel and brought along window boxes and trays of flowers so that the preschool class could enjoy a fun planting session.

The class of three and four year olds spent the morning getting their hands dirty and filling the boxes with colourful flowers. At the end of the session the window boxes were given pride of place outside the school for parents and visitors to see and admire. Each child was then given some seeds to plant their own flowers in their garden’s at home.

Paul Jess, Manager at Parks Nursery, Coleraine Borough Council, said; “This was a wonderful opportunity to get young children involved in planting and we had lots of fun showing them how to fill the window boxes. I would like to thank Cheryl and the girls at Rainbows for allowing us to come along and share our planting skills with them.”

The Rainbows children were also invited to submit colourful pictures of flowers for an art competition were they had opportunity of winning book tokens and mini gardening kits. The lucky prize winners were Asia and Chloe from the Pre School class and Amelia and Hannah from the Out of Schools class.

Paul added: “The artwork submitted for the competition was incredible coming from such a young age group; we were delighted to see that they took such an interest and spent so much time on painting and making their flower pictures.”
