POLICE are appealing for information following a theft of cigarettes in the Maghera area yesterday (Wednesday).

A van was delivering to a convenience store at Glenshane Road around 9.30am when a man made off with an amount of cigarettes.

It is believed that the man entered the van while it was delivering in the Dungiven area and stayed there until it reached Maghera. The man made off from the Glenshane Road, across a field and into a waiting Toyota Avensis car, which drove off towards the Dungiven area.

It is also believed that the Toyota Avensis could have followed the van from Belfast, where it began its journey that morning. The cigarettes were recovered a short time later in the field.

A 49 year old man was later arrested on the M2 motorway on suspicion of theft and has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Police are still looking for the man who was in the van.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Magherafelt Police Station on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
