A MAN accused of grabbing a woman around the neck and banging her head causing her to fall, was given a three-month suspended jail sentence at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

District Judge Alan White told 35-year-old Gary Owen Kelly, of Main Street, Maghera that he was giving him credit for not re-offending in the intervening months.

The judge encouraged Kelly to continue working with probation.

Kelly admitted assaulting the woman and three police officers as well as resisting police during the incident at a house in Maghera on March 18 last year.

Defence barrister Liam McStay described Kelly as an alcoholic who “fully accepted these offences.”

Mr McStay the injured party had been a drinking with him at the time.
