A man who spat in the face of a police officer and told him that he would “rather spit on your grave”, was ordered to carry out 120 hours of community service at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Cathal Browne (24), King Street, Magherafelt, admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour arising out of an incident in the town on February 2.

A prosecuting lawyer said police had been dealing with an arrest when Browne approached and tried to intervene.

A defence lawyer said defendant, who was drunk, “deeply regretted” the incident.

She said Browne had been trying to stop a fight in the process of which he became involved with the police.

She added that he had obtained new employment as a tyre fitter and had taken steps to avoid reoffending.
