Magherafelt stunned by latest rape case

DETECTIVES are investigating another serious sexual assault at Magherafelt - the second this month.

The latest incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning near the town’s police station at Meeting Street.

A 17-year-old girl is reported to have been assaulted in the premises.

Two men - aged 20 and 24 - were arrested and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Local DUP Councillor Paul McLean said people in the town are appalled at hearing of yet another sexual assault.

“It is important that the perpetrators of these crimes are apprehended and brought before the courts,” he said. “I would encourage anyone with information to pass it on to the PSNI.”

Councillor McLean said such “despicable incidents” caused anxiety and concern in the community. His thoughts were with the victim and family.

Earlier this month a woman in her 20’s was sexually assaulted at the Leckagh Drive/Meadowbank area.
