In a statement, Mid Ulster District council said no one was injured in the incident which “saw a glass panel in the viewing gallery break and fall at the poolside”.

“The pool will remain closed until the area has been cleared of glass. It is too early to say at this point how long the pool will be closed,” said a council spokesperson.

“The cause of the incident is under investigation by the Council.”

Last month, the swimming pool at Greenvale Leisure Centre in Magherafelt had to close because a child had a toileting ‘accident’.

The 50-metre pool was the first Olympic-sized facility in Northern Ireland, when it opened in 2012.
