Councillors welcomed the decision at last Thurday's Public Sector Liaison Committee meeting.

Mayor of Ballymena Cllr Maurice Mills described the development as "very important to the town." He said: "I welcome this development, this has been an ongoing issue and I would like to commend the patience of the planner.

"This is the first major development in the area and hopefully it is the fore-runner to a number of other developments."

Councillor Tommy Nicholl said: "I have been involved with this from the beginning and I am delighted with the outcome.

"This is something positive for Ballymena and that whole area in the next year or two, will be all the better for the development."
