Man arrested in Maghera over body find on shores of Lough Neagh

A man has been arrested in Maghera over death of a former republican prisoner whose body was washed up on the shores of Lough Neagh eight years ago.

In 2008 the naked body of Gerard Shorty’ Hampson was discovered by a man walking his dog.

The PSNI have confirmed that a 49-year-old man was arrested in Maghera on Monday.

He was released yesterday pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

According to the Irish News, Mr Hampson’s family have always believed there may have been foul play in his death.

When he went missing in November 2007 Mr Hampson, who came from Northland Road in Derry, was wanted for questioning about the abduction of Brendan Cranston and Linda Doherty in Mullingar, Co Westmeath in 2007.
