A member of the travelling community who pushed his wife’s arm up her back in an agrument, was jailed for six months at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Thomas Patrick Maguire (50), whose address was given as Sperrin View, Magherafelt, admitted assaulting the woman on December 10 last.

Maguire, unemployed, also admitted stealing a mobile phone and keys, valued £150, belonging to the injured party on the same date. He was released on bail of £300 to appeal the sentence.

A defence barrister said the couple have been married four years and have five children.

He said the relationship between them had become more fractious and on this occasion there had been a verbal alteration.

The lawyer claimed the mobile was a shared phone and the assault occurred while Maguire was attempting to get the phone.

District Judge Alan White said Maguire had an atrocious record.
