MID-ULSTER MLA Ian McCrea says he will continue to press government for the Cookstown by pass as well as other captial schemes in the area. Mr McCrea was welcoming the statement at Stormont by DUP Finance Minister Simon Hamilton that he has allocated £1.5m in the October Monitoring round specifically to get the Magherafelt Bypass project of the ground with a further commitment of £13.6m in the next financial year.

“Having fought long and hard alongside party colleagues in Magherafelt, to get the funding put in place for the by-pass in Magherafelt, I am delighted that it is no longer a ‘long finger’ scheme due to the money being made available to make it a reality,” he said.

“Having spoken to business owners, residents and people who travel through Magherafelt day and daily and get caught up in the long queues of traffic trying to get through the town, I took every opportunity to raise the need for the by-pass with the First Minister, Finance Minister and Regional Development Minister to highlight the problems on behalf of everyone affected. This project is extremely important to retailers in Magherafelt who for too long have felt the pinch due to the congestion within the town centre as well as giving a much needed boost to the construction sector.”
