Michael McBrien celebrated his 50th birthday recently and requested donations be made to the Glengormley-based charity instead of gifts.

Michael, from Glengormley, was inspired to make the generous offer after experiencing the wonderful care his wife Teresa was given during her illness in 2001.

Michael said: “Teresa received wonderful care during her illness and I have always felt indebted to Hospice as they were there for us every step of the way.

“Requesting donations from my family and friends was an ideal way to raise vital funds for this charity so close to my heart.

“It was lovely to celebrate this milestone birthday, knowing that the money I raised will make a huge difference to local patients facing terminal illness across Northern Ireland.

“For me, that is the best gift I could have asked for.”

Hospice donor development officer Sharon Gorman thanked Michael for his kind offer and donation of £557.

She added: “We were delighted when Michael contacted us about his 50th birthday plans.

“Without support from generous people like Michael, the Hospice simply couldn’t provide the unique care which local families need.

“This tremendous donation is really appreciated as it will enable us to provide five nights of nursing care in a patient’s home.”

She added: “Giving in celebration is a unique and meaningful way of supporting the work of the Northern Ireland Hospice if you are celebrating something special such as a wedding, birthday, anniversary, christening, confirmation or a retirement.”
