Convicted Dungannon cocaine smuggler Michaella McCollum has been moved to the notorious Ancon 2 prison in Peru where drugs and prostitution are rife.

Despite being a more modern, mixed facility which mainly houses foreign prisoners, Melissa and Michaella will have to share their cell with up to 30 other women.

In December, the pair were each jailed for six years and eight months after they attempted to smuggle £1.5m worth of cocaine out of Peru’s Jorge Chávez International Airport in their suitcases.

Ancon houses almost 3,000 inmates in a remote location around one hour’s drive north of Lima.

The move came as a blow for the family of Melissa Reid who are expecting her to be transferred to a prison in Scotland to serve out her sentence.

Michaella, a former nightclub hostess, was only able to phone her family back in Dungannon to tell them about the move after bribing prison officers to use the phone. The conditions are a far cry from the relative comfort Michaella and her Scottish pal Melissa enjoyed in Virgen de Fatima.

It’s believed Michaella’s family has been seeking urgent meetings with David Ford’s Justice Department in a bid to get her transfer procedure underway so she can serve the remainder of her sentence at home.

Lasr year her sister Samantha told Daybreak that her family believe she has not committed a crime.

“In our opinion Michaella is innocent, she will always be innocent,” she said.
