SDLP Economy spokesperson Patsy McGlone has voiced his concern about the Economy Minister’s ambivalence over a rise in student fees, and has called on the Economy and Finance Ministers to clarify their positions.
Firmly in favour of reducing tuition fees, he said increasing access to higher education and apprenticeships would fuel a new economic dynamic and provide young people with an opportunity to build a life at home.
“I have heard the new Economy Minister dance around the issue of increasing student fees,” he explained. “We must be absolutely clear – diminishing access to higher education and apprenticeships would be a massively retrograde step that would damage our economy, devastate our communities and deal a hammer blow to families across the North.
“We will stand with students and with the student movement in defence of their right to an affordable education. Others should join us.”
