Mid-Ulster MLAs have been condemning an attack on a Polish couple and their five children in Moneymore.

Sinn Féin’s Ian Milne described it as despicable.

He said: “Any hate crime is to be condemned but when they are motivated by racism or sectarianism they are particularly despicable.

“There are a number of families from different nationalities living in this estate and the last thing the community needs is for tensions to be raised.

“This is not the first attack on the family’s property and they are now living in fear and wish to move from their present accommodation.

“I will be in touch with the housing authourities to see what can be done to reassure them and help them feel more secure.”

Ulster Unionist Party MLA, Sandra Overend, said it was a sickening attack.

“The incident, however, does appear to be isolated,” she continued.

“Many families and individuals of differing nationalities have lived in and around Moneymore for some time without fear or intimidation, and I hope that attacks like this do not disrupt the normally welcoming atmosphere of the village.”
