A butcher detected travelling at over 100mph on the Desertmartin Road, Moneymore, was fined £165 at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Thomas Gunning (24), of Grove Road, Maghera, also received five penalty points for speeding on April 4.

A PPS lawyer said police on mobile patrol recorded a BMW car travelling at 102mph, 42 in excess of the legal limit.

Admitting the offence Joe Mallon, solicitor, said defendant was driving his father’s car and the offence had happened on a long, straight stretch of road.

Mr Mallon pleaded with the court not to disqualify Gunning as he required his licence to get to and from his work in Cookstown.

For a similar offence, Eamon Moore (29), Rathbrady Road, Limavady, was fined £75 with three penalty points at the same court.
