MTV toreturn forAugust 15gig in city

Londonderry is to host a major MTV concert in Ebrington Square on August 15 following on from last year’s event.

Oonagh McGillion, Director of Legacy with Derry City and Strabane District Council, who was directly involved in bringing the MTV Crashes event to the city last year, said she expected demand for the gig in August to be as strong as 2014.

“MTV Crashes attracted an audience from across the island of Ireland and successfully showcased the city and particularly Ebrington Square, as an ideal location to host large scale events.

“A key element of our legacy plan was to encourage the private sector and communities to build on the work that has been achieved since UK City of Culture 2013, to build a lasting legacy for future generations,” she added.

Mayor Elisha McCallion said: “Today’s announcement has come about following the success of the MTV Crashes event that took place in the city during Music City 2014, when the Club Night gig was MTV’s fastest ever selling ticketed event.

“Last year’s event was a phenomenal success and a key element of the city’s legacy commitment to our young people and I am delighted MTV has returned for what will be a hugely successful event for everyone involved,” she said.

She added: “The involvement of Legacy Promotions in this project is a sign of the growing confidence of the local business sector and I would like to commend the company for taking the initiative to enter this partnership with Club MTV to bring about a fantastic event for our youth.”
