New initiative to curb dog fouling

MORE resources are to be deployed by Magherafelt Council to combat dog fouling in the district.

The new initiative follows a recent meeting of the council’s general purpose committee which heard details of dog fouling of footpaths and public areas such as parks and playing fields.

SDLP Magherafelt Town Councillor Jim Campbell, welcoming the move, said: “Footpaths in areas of the town are totally disgusting and obviously some dog owners are showing no regard for other citizens.

“Nowhere seems to be free of this nuisance though Hospital Road and Coolshinney Road areas are particularly bad.

“These areas are very popular with casual walkers and fitness enthusiasts and are also used by young children en route to school.

“Many dog owners use scoops and plastic bags to clean up after their pets but unfortunately there are a significant few who show no regard at all for others and let their dogs run amok, Lets hope the Council’s initiative can deliver a sustainable improvement”.
