Newmills and District VC Group are hosting numerous and exciting events throughout the month of August (3-10) to coincide with the start of World War 1.

Newmills and District VC Group was formed in January 2014 to explore how best to commemorate WW1 and the Victoria Cross awarded to Private Robert Morrow, originally from Newmills and one of only eight awarded, a VC in Northern Ireland.

The group managed to get improvements started to the VC Cenotaph in Newmills and is currently in discussions with Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council about the development of an Amenity Garden.

Through the groups efforts a memorial stone is being issued by Her Majesty’s Government to Newmills in recognition of the Victoria Cross awarded to Pte. Morrow.

The key event this August, is an opening ceremony which will take place in Newmills Community Hall, 93 Farlough Rd, Newmills, Dungannon on Monday (August 4) starting at 10am.

Many dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant of Tyrone and the chair of the WW1 Centenary Committee the Rt Hon Jeffrey Donaldson MP will be in attendance.

A brief over view of events include, a Service on Remembrance in Carland Presbyterian Church on Tuesday (August 5), a football match between Newmills FC and Cookstown RBL, on Wednesday and VC Variety Concert in Cookstown Royal British Legion.
