MEMBERS of the community are being urged to look out for their elderly neighbours following the assault of a Magherafelt man in his bedroom on New Year’s Day.

The cowardly attack on the pensioner in his home on the Castledawson Road has caused outrage in the area.

Police say they don’t believe anything was taken from the house during the incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Neighbours and friends of the man, who required hospital treatment for injuries sustained in the attack, said they were shocked by what had occurred.

One said it was a particularly low act, carried out on a man they described as “infirm and living alone.”

“It’s disgusting that someone who is elderly, vulnerable and living alone would be treated in this way,” the friend said.

“He (the man) was very ill over a year ago and spent a spell in hospital. This attack was downright cowardly.”

Another added: “It’s shocking. Things like this didn’t happen years ago. They seem to be targeting the most vulnerable in society. It’s frightening.”

DUP councillor Anne Forde yesterday appealed to members of the community to keep an eye out for their elderly neighbours.

She said: “I totally condemn this act and appeal to anyone with information or knowledge of it to contact local police immediately.

“Older people living on their own are very vulnerable at Christmas time and, in fact, at any time of the year.”

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack to come forward with information.
