Cookstown student pens winning ‘Peace’ poem
A student at Holy Trinity College in Cookstown has picked up a prize in the Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation Poetry competition.
Joseph Neeson was the winner in the under 18 category of the competition which was established to promote the work of the former local MP in building a peaceful Ireland.
Mid Ulster MLA Michelle O’Neill has congratulated the teenager.
Ms O’Neill said: “I wish to thank everyone for taking part in this competition but I am really delighted to see that a local Mid Ulster student has won the U18 section. I am thrilled for Joseph Neeson and loved his winning poem, “Peace”.
“I am looking forward to getting the opportunity to meet with Joseph following the easing of lockdown restrictions and commending him on his winning poem. It’s extra special that a local lad has won this competition given the hugely important connection Martin had with the Mid Ulster constituency.”
