Paul was the husband of Claire and father of Katie and Caoimhe.

The popular member of the Glengormley community was a founding member of St Mary’s Football Club.

Club Treasurer, Brian Byrne, said Paul “was a lovely lad who’s left this world far too early.”

Speaking to this paper, Mr Byrne said: “Paul was one of our first ever youth players when the club was established in 1996 by his uncle Frankie who is our Club President and remains with the club still.

“Paul played up to about 18 and then helped coach for a number of years.

“His illness became known to the club about a month ago and plans were being made to hold a fundraiser with the consent of the family. Sadly coronavirus and Paul’s fast deterioration have delayed our efforts, but when this crisis is over, it’s agreed that we will be doing something in his memory.”

Posting on social media, a spokesperson for the club added: “The Committee, Management and all members of St Mary’s FC wish to express our sincerest condolences to the Wilson family at this very sad time.”

Commenting on Facebook, South Antrim Alliance MLA John Blair said: “Very sad news, thoughts with Claire and family.”
