Virtual event to celebrate two Mid Ulster environmental heroes

St Colm's Eco Club and their Ballinascreen Intergenerations Project and Community Colloboration, and environmental advocate George Seviour-Crockett, will be recognised in a virtual event later this month.

Taking place March 25 at 7pm, the Tales of the Times Celebration Event showcases a selection of Live Here Love Here supporters from across the country including Mid Ulster

Each of these volunteers – both individuals and groups - have been crucial to supporting their communities during the Covid-19 pandemic by instilling civic pride and tackling environmental issues such as litter, biodiversity loss and climate action.

The selected volunteers will be shared for the first time at the live event so residents of Mid Ulster are encouraged to join online and show their support to those who contribute to making Northern Ireland a healthier, greener, safer and more sustainable place to live.

Live Here Love Here’s Helen Tomb said: “Our Tales of the Times Celebration Event will allow us to give these local heroes due recognition for their unwavering contribution to their communities in these unprecedented times.”

Environment Minister, Edwin Poots said: “I want to thank everyone across Northern Ireland who has volunteered their time to make a real difference to their communities during what has been a challenging year.

“I want everyone to know that their work is hugely appreciated, and it’s hoped that their efforts will inspire others to do the same.

“I would encourage everyone to attend this virtual event to show appreciation and thanks to all those who have given their time towards addressing important environmental issues within their communities that affect us all.”

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Cathal Mallaghan, added: “Residents in Mid Ulster have an excellent record when it comes to addressing and indeed supporting environmental issues. The district consistently has the highest recycling rate of all 11 councils here, currently sitting at 58.8% and it also had the biggest reduction in waste sent to landfill with only 3.7% of waste being landfilled.

“Individuals, schools and organisations in the district have worked tirelessly, even during the very difficult and challenging circumstances of the last year, to continue their fight to help protect our environment. I’m delighted these local heroes are going to receive the recognition they deserve on the big screen during the Tales of the Times Celebration Event. I would like to congratulate our successful Mid Ulster entries St Colm’s High School Eco Club/ Ballinascreen Intergenerational Project and George Seviour-Crockett on being selected to tell their stories at the event. I know the stories will inspire others in the district to follow their example and continue this great environmental work in Mid Ulster.”
