Police warning to on-street drinkers

POLICE have issued a warning to on-street drinkers in the Portrush and Portstewart areas.

Patrols are set to clamp down on people breaching the on-street drinking bye laws in the coastal towns, as the holiday season continues.

Last week, police said that the levels of on street drinking in the Station Square, West Strand and Harbour areas of Portrush, and The Crescent and The Promenade areas of Portstewart was not acceptable.

They also revealled that on street drinking in the resorts had led to more reports of anti social behaviour.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Sharon Campbell said: “We have recently received a number of reports of people breaching the on-street drinking by-laws in full view of the public.

“We are determined to maintain a family friendly atmosphere in Portrush and Portstewart and would therefore remind everyone that on street drinking is prohibited in both seaside towns.

“There is no excuse for this type of behaviour as the prohibited areas are clearly signposted.

“And, I would also urge people to take heed of the warning as my colleagues will be making full use of Council by-laws in an effort to resolve this issue,” concluded Sergeant Campbell.
