Policewoman assaulted during 'undercover' operation - court is told

A BALLYMONEY man, worse for wear due to drink, prompted an 'undercover' police operation in the town, a court has heard.

North Antrim Magistrates Court in Coleraine was told police were called to the home of Christopher Lewis Connor on January 29 of this year following a disturbance and found him wrapped up in his duvet in bed.

When police entered the room at the Alexandra Avenue property he hurled obscenities at them and threw his arms in the air erratically, the court was told.

A prosecutor said that in the midst of the altercation Connor head-butted a female officer, connecting with her torso.

She had no lasting injuries.

The court was told Connor had been detected drink-driving earlier that day - just yards from the gates of Coleraine Police Station.

A defence solicitor for Connor said his client - who is aged 19 - had spent some time in police custody before officers took him home shortly after 7am.

The solicitor said his client's mother had been on holiday at the time and the only other person at the address was Connor's 21-year-old half brother who was less than amused by his sibling's actions.

"His brother took exception to him being detected and tempers flared can we say and Connor lost control," said the defence solicitor.

Connor's half brother called the police.

The defence solicitor said his client is currently unemployed but plans to set up an online business in the future.

"He apologises to the court for his behaviour," said the solicitor.

District Judge Richard Wilson, said: "His behaviour and language certainly left a lot to be desired."

Addressing Connor directly Mr Wilson added: "He (Connor's half-brother) wasn't best pleased was he?"

"No," replied Connor.

"You can understand that," said Mr Wilson.

"Don't do it again, that's the moral isn't it?"

Connor was fined 200 for assault on police. A further charge of common assault was withdrawn by the prosecution.

"Get that paid and reduce your alcohol consumption," said Mr Wilson.
