Colum Eastwood MP said: “Jim Cavanagh was the definition of a gentleman.

“It didn’t matter who you were, where you came from or what you believed, he was one of those people who could find a common ground or a common interest with anyone.

“As a councillor for over 30 years, Jim contributed immensely to Coalisland.

“He was rooted in the community he loved as a civil rights activist and having served as principal of a number of local schools.

“It was always a pleasure to catch up with Jim at party events.

“He will be missed by the SDLP team in Mid Ulster and across our party.

“Our thoughts are with his wife Marie and their wide circle of family and friends at this difficult time.”

According to a notice on funeral times Mr Cavanagh passed away: “peacefully in the care of his family” on Wednesday, April 29.
