£310,000 funding boost for Coleraine

A total of £115,000 will be made available for a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA)in the Millburn estate.

The MUGA will be located beside the existing community centre and children’s play park and will include flood lighting to allow for extended evening usage in Autumn and Winter months.

Mr McCausland, pictured, said: “This project represents a positive step forward for the future of the Millburn area in improving the physical condition of the estate.

“The recreational area will also provide a central focus for the young people from the area to be involved in sport, improving health, addressing social exclusion, reducing crime and opening up opportunities to access sport.”

The £115,000 has been awarded from the Department for Social Development’s Neighbourhood Renewal fund with Coleraine Borough Council contributing £20,000 towards construction costs of the project.

Mr McCausland also revealed plans for a new £195,000 play park in the Coleraine Neighbourhood Renewal Area.

Children in the Ballysally estate will soon be able to enjoy the new facility which will be situated in the Elms Park, Ballygallin Park, and Loughanhill Park area of the estate.

The Minister said: “This new play park will not only provide a much needed source of fun and enjoyment for young people and families in the area but will also enhance the local environment. I am pleased to be able to fund this very worthwhile project.

“Play is an integral part of building social skills from a young age. It is also important for promoting active and healthy lifestyles in children.”

The project was developed following consultation with local resident groups in partnership with Coleraine Borough Council. Coleraine Borough Council will manage the delivery of the project.
