'Real UVF' issue new warning to Republicans over UDR threats

A GROUP calling itself The Real UVF is threatening to target Republicans if former UDR soldiers are attacked in Mid-Ulster.

In a letter to a MAIL reporter, containing a bullet, the group vow to “respond to IRA threats upon ex-UDR.”

The group threaten to target what they describe as “PIRA intelligence” and ask people to “remember” Sinn Fein councillors John Joe Davey, Bernard O’Hagan and Catholics Sean Brown and Fergal McCusker, who were all murdered by loyalists.

Bellaghy Independent Republican Oliver Hughes said he had no hestitation in condemning without reservation such a threat whether it be from “Dissident Republican or Dissident Unionist.”

“It is high time the people who issue such threats took stock of the fact that peace was voted for by all shades of opinion and that situation will not be changed by them,” he said.

“The individuals who issue threats in such a fashion command no support or respect within the community.”

It recently emerged that more than 15 members of the now disbanded UDR, who live in the Magherafelt and Cookstown areas, have received notification from the PSNI that threats had been made to their lives by Dissident Republicans.

One of the ex-soldiers claimed that the PSNI tried to pass the threats off as cruel hoaxes, something the victim cannot accept.

“We have been made aware of numerous threats to our lives since before Christmas,” the person revealed. “The whole ordeal has made our lives very difficult.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “We do not discuss the security of any individual. However, if we receive information that a person's life may be at risk we will inform them accordingly. We never ignore anything which may put an individual at risk.”
