Sand Road action call

The Sand Road/Woodtown Road junction where Roads Service have recently put safety signage in place.

Safety measures recently completed at a dangerous road junction near Galgorm by Roads Service are welcome but more could be done, local MLA Paul Frew says.

The DUP Assemblyman said he has been applying pressure on Roads Service for a long number of years to enhance safety at the Sand Road/Woodtown Road junction.

New junction warning signs and ‘SLOW ‘ markings have now been provided on Sand Road on each of its approaches to the Woodtown Road.

A new advance ‘STOP‘ sign on a grey backing board and a new ‘STOP’ sign on a high visibility yellow backing board have been provided on the Woodtown Road approach to the junction.

Mr Frew said: “I believe more needs done at this junction and it would take a major scheme to improve visibility.

“Roads Service have told me that they currently have a scheme proposal under development with a number of options being looked at. This proposal has been added to a list of similar schemes in the Ballymena area that will be developed in accordance with current policy and procedures.

“Subject to gaining approval at the various stages of the process a scheme proposal may then progress through to prioritisation within a future years programme. Prioritisation will take account of future funding availability along with a number of other key issues .

“I would urge Road Service to prioritise this junction, as soon as possible, as I believe it is much needed and could well save life,” said the MLA.
