Sex charges against care worker dropped

A Co Antrim care worker, who was alleged to have engaged in sexual acts with a person in his care, has had all charges against him withdrawn.

Gary McGrath-Hayes (42), of Mountview Drive, Ballybogey, appeared at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court in Coleraine on Thursday morning.

The defendant had been charged with two counts of intentionally and sexually touching a person with a mental disorder on April 30 last year and further charged with intentionally touching the alleged victim - who cannot be named to protect their identity - in a sexual manner on the same date.

However, during the short hearing, on Thursday the Public Prosecution Service told the court all matters were to be withdrawn. District Judge, Liam McNally, told Mr McGrath-Hayes he was free to go as all charges had been withdrawn against him.

A week before he was charged last month, McGrath-Hayes went missing from his home but was eventually found safe and well following a police appeal.
