‘Space is grace’ - Dr Newell

COOKSTOWN and District Inter-Church Forum held its AGM in the Ballroom of Lissan House on Monday, May 13.

Members of the Forum were joined by representatives from Ballymena Church Forum, Cookstown District Council’s Good Relations Officer, Sean McElhatton and members of Cookstown Clergy Forum.

The office bearers elected for 2013-2014 were Chairperson-Margaret Hamilton, Vice Chair-Libby Keys, Secretary-Alan Marsh, Treasurer-Sean O’Kane and PRO-Pauline Marshall. Elected to the committee were Iris Allen, Malachy Falls, Liam McNeill, David Murray, Dessy O’Neill, Peter Rogers, Pat Rutherford, Una Teague and Ronnie Thompson.

The guest speaker was The Rev Dr Ken Newell, former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and presently Minister of Fitzroy Presbyterian Church in Belfast.

Dr Newell gave an inspiring presentation entitled “Imitation of Christ: living an inclusive life style in a divided community”.

Dr Newell spoke of the importance of looking for the best in others’ traditions. He went on to say that Jesus had lived in a fractured society like ours but made no difference in how he dealt with people. There was no ‘us and them’. We must look for the best in others’ traditions and leave space in our hearts for those who differ from us.

“Space,” said Dr Newell, “is grace.”

The evening ended with an excellent buffet supper in Lissan House library.
