A pensioner detected travelling at 70mph on the Glenshane Road, was banned from driving for a month.

Shaun McNeilly, 69, of Hillhead Road, Castledawson, was also fined a total of £165 on a charge of exceeding the speed limit on July 18 last.

A defence lawyer told Magherafelt Magistrates Court that the defendant currently had nine penalty points on his licence.

He explained that McNeilly had been on his way to Derry for a fund raising event in aid of children in Africa.

The lawyer said the defendant has devoted his life to charitable work and pleaded with the court to give him a chance to continue doing this work by imposing a short disqualification.

Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop warned defendant to watch his speed as he would still have nine penalty points on his licence.
