Step forward for Market Yard Development

The project includes the new home of Coleraine Regional Museum, Coleraine Regional Library, visitor information services, a public event space and caf within the original 19th century listed walls of the Market Yard site.

The planning application, including a substantial site model, is on public display in Coleraine Borough Council headquarters until Friday January 22, and will be in Coleraine Library from Monday, January 25 until Friday, February 5.

Councillor Adrian McQuillan, chairman of the Council's project committee, said: "The Market Yard project will regenerate a neglected part of Coleraine Town Centre.

"It's an exciting building that has already created a lot of buzz."

Helen Perry Causeway Museum Service Officer confirmed that the application was submitted on December 7.

She said: "The Market Yard Project will contribute to the range of visitor attractions on the North Coast and will reconnect people with their unique heritage at a place that was once at the heart of commercial life of the town."

The Market Yard was originally built by the Corporation of Coleraine in 1829 when demand for market space in the Diamond increased. It ceased functioning as a cattle market in the early 1980s.
