Straw craft demo at Barn Museum

VISITORS at this year’s annual Bird Fair at Tannaghmore Gardens had the opportunity to take part in a straw craft demonstration in the Barn Museum.

Straw craft is one of Britain and Ireland’s traditional crafts which have been practiced for hundreds of years, but has suffered a decline in more recent years. This traditional craft uses inexpensive tools (all you need to start is a supply of straw and a pair of scissors) which make it ideal for both children and adults alike.

Straw craft isn’t just about making Corn Dollies, but includes crafting practical items such as baskets, hats and much more. It also includes more artistic elements such as harvest knots, masks and tied straw figures.

The demonstration, which was supported by Craigavon Arts In Motion programme, was a fantastic success with both children and adults taking the opportunity to ‘try their hand’ at one of the many forms of straw crafting. Many took home a ‘harvest knot’ as a memento of their visit to the Borough.
