Suicide Prevention is active in the Northern Area - Safe Talk Training Roadshow

The three Public Health Agency Protect/Life Suicide Prevention Funded Community Based Suicide Prevention Development Officers within the Northern Area are hosting a SAFE TALK Roadshow across the Northern Locality between September – November 2012, in partnership with Dare to Stretch (also funded by the Public Health Agency, the training is FREE to attend).

Ten sessions will be delivered within communities with each of the sessions emphasising the importance of recognising the signs of suicide, communicating with the person at risk and getting help or resources for the person at risk. Upon successful completion each participant will receive a certificate.

Amanda Pollock, Suicide Prevention Development Officer for North Antrim Community Network and Causeway Rural & Urban Network highlights, ‘SafeTALK is Suicide Awareness for everyone and the sessions will prepare participants with the skills to better identify people who maybe having thoughts of suicide whilst also equipping participants with the TALK steps; (Tell, Ask, Listen, Keepsafe) when connecting with a person with suicidal thoughts’.

There are five sessions being held across the North Antrim/ Causeway areas and the sessions are open to anyone aged fifteen or over from the area, who is interested in promoting mental health or suicide prevention and who is interested in building upon their knowledge of suicide prevention. Sessions will be held as follows;

Wednesday, 26th September 2012, 7pm – 10pm, Glenlough Community Centre, Carnlough; Monday, 8th October 2012, 6:30pm – 9:30pm Ballykeel Business Centre, Ballymena;

Thursday, 11th October, (Afternoon session T.B.C)The Resource Centre, Rathlin Island;

Monday, 5th November 2012, 10am – 1pm, Ballysally Youth & Community Centre, Coleraine; Tuesday, 6th November 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Ballymoney Resource Centre, 2 Riada Ave, Ballymoney.
