Supporting Zomba

OVER 300 walking enthusiasts and ZAP supporters turned out for the annual Zomba walk and barbecue last Tuesday.

The annual charity event attracted walkers from across the Borough of Coleraine, coming together to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and excellent panoramic views that the three mile Drumbane Trail has to offer on Mullan’s hill farm.

The barbecue element of this popular cross community event, now in its eighth year, had to be relocated from its traditional location of Mullan’s hill farm, Drumbane, Glenullin, due to damage caused to farmyard sheds during this year’s unprecedented Easter snow storms.

Thankfully, the committee of Glenullin GAA club kindly offered their clubhouse as an alternative venue for the annual evening of fun, entertainment and excellent food.

Paddy O’Kane and Jim Turner alongside other local musicians entertained the walkers.

Councillor William King MBE, Chairman of the Zomba Action Project thanked all involved with the organisation and staging of the event.

He said: “The 3,000 raised will go towards development projects in the Municipality of Zomba to help communities develop income generating projects which will contribute towards their food and sustain their future incomes.”

Mark Strong, Council’s Countryside Development Officer added: “An event of this scale would simply not happen without the dedication and enthusiasm of certain people.

“My sincere thanks to Charlie and Margaret Mullan for their gracious welcome and on-going partnership with Council and to Monica McGuigan and her willing band of volunteers from the ‘Get Up and Go Walking Club’ and SVP in Kilrea for providing, preparing and serving the food.

“I would also like to thank Glenullin GAA club for welcoming us to their premises this year and the talented musicians who provided entertainment. Thanks also to Barry Dallat, from Arbutus Restaurant in Kilrea, for volunteering his services to cook the barbecue. I think everyone who attended would agree that it was a huge success.”
