The Sash WHOSE Father wore?

SINCE 2004 the village of Dervock has witnessed significant changes to the composition of its character.

In particular, the re-imaging Communities project within the village has provided a foundation for further exploration of cultural identity in a radical programme of workshops.

This will build on cross-community and multi-cultural work already begun through the annual civic festival and half marathon. This series of workshops will develop the capacity of the group participants to engage in dialogue within their own communities around issues relating to identity, sectarianism, racism, intimidation and any other related local issues.

The recent discussion in Dervock; which centered on the origin, the symbolism of both the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Loyal Orange Lodge provided a platform for open and frank (Dialogue and Exchange) discussion on both institutes.

We hope that it will result in an increased awareness and understanding of the views, opinions and beliefs of others.

Participation in this Peace III Community Dialogue & Exchange programme – alongside environmental projects and the Re-Imaging Communities initiative is designed to improve both the appearance and the infrastructure of our village.

Frankie Cunningham (Chairperson), commented: “These series of workshops promoting dialogue between people of different faith and cultural backgrounds, in an area which has long been seen as ‘single-identity’ shows our commitment to opening up the village for visitors and tourists.”
