New details onSawel turbine

THE developer of a proposed mini water turbine near the source of the Faughan on Sawel Mountain has submitted new documents to the planners.

Planners now have a peat slide assessment, transform assessment and statement of construction method.

Hydro NI proposes a micro-hydroelectric, renewable energy system (18.5kw) on the Sawel Mountain Stream, to supply electricity exported to the grid, on behalf of a Mr Seamus McGlinchey.

The proposal was originally lodged in 2011 and in 2012 it attracted an objection from Jim Haughey, on behalf of the Ulster Angling Foundation.

Last summer he wrote: “Our member Angling Associations are very concerned about the development of hydroelectric schemes on rivers as some of these proved to be detrimental to the river environment generally and to fisheries in particular.”
