Strathfoyle anti-incineration campaigner to stand as Faughan candidate

Whilst Mr Hughes has been prominently involved in the anti-incineration campaign in Enagh, he is at pains to point out that he is not standing as a single-issue candidate.

He said he will also ensure proper representation of constituents of the new Faughan ward, if elected.

He said: “As an elected independent I would ensure proper representation, making people’s voices matter and holding planners and politicians to account.

“I would use my presence in Council to fight for social justice for the unemployed and those affected by welfare reform and benefit cuts.

“I would also campaign to ensure that community groups and those organisations providing essential services such as Foyle Search and Rescue, drug and alcohol support and mental health services secure the necessary funding to sustain and expand them in times of austerity when they are needed most.”

Youth inclusion and bridging the rural/urban divide are also amongst his key priorities.

He also says he will seek answers to questions concerning tarry waste sites in the Faughan Valley, the illegal landfilling at the City Waste site on the Mobuoy Road and the historical dumping of radioactive waste at Culmore Point over thirty years ago.
