Ulster Orchestra returns to the Island Hall

The much loved orchestra, under the baton of Chief Conductor Rafael Payare, will be performing the fun and energetic Eighth Symphony by Dvorak but the concert will open by showcasing the string section, who will perform a light-hearted piece by Mozart followed by the somewhat heavier work by Bartok.

The orchestra’s Principal Clarinet, Paul Schumann, who lives in Lisburn, is hoping local people will come along to experience the orchestra in their hometown.

Paul, who moved to Lisburn from London in 1974, has been with the Ulster Orchestra for 33 years and he still loves performing as much now as he did over thirty years ago.

“The classical repertoire is so varied, we are always doing different things,” explained Paul.

“There are popular symphonies and works we do that the public want to hear again and again but we try to keep it varied.”

Paul is looking forward to the Orchestra’s return to his hometown and is certain that the audience will appreciate the pieces that have been chosen for the Lisburn concert.

“It is unusual for an out-of-town concert to feature just the strings but it gives the orchestra the opportunity to show off the string section,

“Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony is not as well known as his Ninth Symphony but it is fun and energetic and very enjoyable.”
